Coping with Being Myopic

One of the most frequent grounds for having eyeglasses is myopia

For a lot of reasons, a person might become short sighted. The offical term for this is shortsightedness. When somebody is myopic, they can’t focus well into the distance, alternatively they can see quite sharply, when looking up close at things.

The degree to which one is nearsighted depends on the powers of the cornea and the lens of the eye and the length of the eyeball. In a normal eye the incoming visual images meet on the retina in the back of the eye. If these visual images converge in front of the retina instead of on the retina, then one is nearsighted.

myopia does decreases in later life. This appears not to be related to a lessening in close work as is often proposed on the other hand rather due to some factor intrinsically related to ageing. It has been hypothesized the power of the lens of the eye modifies in later life.

About 1 in 4 Americans are shortsighted.

An ophthalmic opticianwill analyze a child’s eye and vision very carefully and work out if there is a problem with how they focus images.

To work out how badly nearsighted you are and the specific nature of your myopia, more tests will need to be conducted. This will help to determine the type of eye specs that you will need. The optician will assess visual acuity, visual movements and the ability to focus on nearby targets. They may need to dilate the pupil to see if there are any rare or alarming complications.

Since children are capable of over focusing, dilation can help the ophthalmic optician determine a child’s true prescription due to the fact that the drugs used to dilate also impair this tendency to over focus. Over focusing can cause a child to appear to be nearsighted when he or she is actually not.

eyeglasses will be needed to correct your nearsightedness. For children under the age of 4, eyeglasses may not be needed though. .

Once a child starts school, then being able to focus on the board becomes important for learning, etc. So they should be regularly assessed for the need to wear glasses or the need to change their prescription.

Apart from a few children with esophoria (not able to converge their eyes) myopic children must wear their eyeglasses as often as they can, otherwise they could do harm to their eyes.
