When someone calls their furniture a ‘couch’ I assume that they must be a comfort driven person. The word conjures up images of a sleepy Saturday afternoon or a quiet evening with a book. You’ve heard your friends talk about it and you’ve seen it on
commercials. But how easy is it to install laminate flooring?
This article will let you know how to install your brand new
laminate flooring and even let you know which brands are easier
then the others. You’ve just paid your money for your laminate
flooring so you may as well get it laid down.

Some people think that all you have to do is line up the pieces
and then CLICK- in it goes. If only it were that easy then we
would all be doing it like that. The truth is that not all
companies will provide you with the easiest to install laminate
flooring. You will curse and you might cry, but once it is all
done you will definitely marvel at your new floor.

Obviously before you start you must clear the room. Nothing
should be in your way. Your master piece is about to be made and
nothing must be in your creative space. A little tip when you
are deciding which way you want the grain to face: the
manufacturers recommend that the grain faces the same way that
the sun comes in just to make it look even better. If you have a
video tape that was included with the laminate flooring then it
is highly recommended that you view the tape before installing
the laminate flooring, just so you know what might be coming.

When you are installing laminate flooring remember to have a
checklist of the tools that you will need. This will save you
from having to go to the hardware store during installation.
When you are installing you laminate flooring the first thing
you must do is tap the short ends together. However- DO NOT tap
them too hard. Doing so could damage them, so just tap gently
and wait for the seam to close.

Next, always keep the tongue towards you as you are installing
the laminate flooring. NEVER tap against the grove. Make sure
that you overlap the seams by at least 16-18 inches, if you
don’t then you might void your warranty.

To install the first row always start from the left and then tap
the short side of another board with the first one. This will
create a link between the two. Repeat this until you are near
the end of the room. Then check the space left (it should be
5/16 inch.). After that you can then put in the spacers along
the wall and the laminated board.

As you are installing the rows of laminate flooring, hinge the
long sides and allow them to simply fall into place. Then simply
tap the short sides together. There is a 2 part bonding agent
placed on the tongue and on the groove of the short sides of the
laminate flooring boards. Once the boards have been in contact
for at least 20 minutes, the chemical reaction using the agent
should begin to strengthen the boards. After 24hours the process
is complete.

Building a Concrete Countertop

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, August 2005 — Concrete countertops,
recognized first by architects and designers for their aesthetic
potential and project versatility, are fast-becoming the answer
to homeowners’ demands for a relatively inexpensive countertop
alternative that doesn’t require a high-level of expertise to
install. In addition, they offer homeowners an exciting
opportunity to literally try their hand at being creative.
Step-by-step books, videos and hands-on training are now readily
available for homeowners to confidently engage in such
do-it-yourself (DIY) projects as building concrete countertops.

Married couple Chris and Ali Collins were excited to take on a
DIY project after purchasing their San Francisco flat. A
logistical real estate developer/construction manager and an
educational specialist, Chris and Ali are also architecture and
home design enthusiasts. With a penchant for getting their hands
dirty, building and installing their own concrete countertop
seemed a natural choice for them.

The couple’s instructional guide and source for design
inspiration was award-winning designer Fu-Tung Cheng’s Concrete
Countertops: Design, Forms, and Finishes for the New Kitchen and
Bath (Taunton, 2002), a national bestseller in the remodeling
and design genre).

Since its release in 2002, Concrete Countertops has been the go-
to guide for designing and building concrete countertops. The
book takes both professionals and do-it-yourselfers through the
step-by-step process of design considerations, planning,
building a concrete countertop mold, mixing and pouring the
concrete, curing, grinding, polishing, and finally installing
the concrete countertop.

“We found the book to be very helpful,” says Chris. It really
was a key element to what we feel was a big success. It was a
challenging and rewarding experience. We also loved the ease of
using Cheng’s mix products.”

Chris happens to be no stranger to concrete: “My interest goes
back several years when I was building restaurants and retail
spaces. I installed concrete countertops and worked with
concrete artisans doing integral color and stained concrete
floors.” In April of 2003, Chris and Ali purchased a two-flat
building in space-challenged San Francisco. Recently, they sold
the lower flat as a tenant-in-common unit and now occupy the
upper flat, which offers roughly 950 sq. ft. of living space.
Before they considered building their own kitchen concrete
countertop, Chris and Ali hired a contractor for an extensive
remodel of the home. Combining existing traditional design
elements with a modern aesthetic, several interior walls were
eliminated to open up the old “shotgun” style layout. The result
is an open, loft-like living space where the kitchen and living
zones flow together. Architectural details that were preserved
include the original red oak floors, 10-feet high coved ceilings
and original doors and trim.

“We both enjoy the process of designing and creating our own
living space to fit how we live. This applies to the space we
occupy as well as the details within it,” says Ali. “We both
like the idea of working with our hands, using materials that
are natural, accessible, beautiful, and flexible.” Chris added,
“Concrete counters are beautiful, cool, earthy, solid, and you
just want to touch them. The counters were a perfect way for us
to create something beautiful out of our own ideas and hard
work, and the uniqueness of the end product is a representation
of our unique ideas.” Their kitchen, 10 feet wide by 15 feet
long (150 sq. ft.), didn’t offer much room for Chris and Ali to
work — but that didn’t stop the big plans they had for their
narrow kitchen. They wanted to have a logical cooking zone with
a work triangle, plenty of counter space and still have enough
room to accommodate a dining area.

Like most urban San Francisco properties, space is almost always
an issue. To remedy this, a straight run of upper and lower
cabinets and a concrete countertop with a dishwasher, sink, oven
and stove is located along one wall of the kitchen. A built-in
banquette and dining table is located opposite the concrete
countertop work area. An adjacent wall hosts a refrigerator and
tall cabinets.

Chris and Ali agree that the most interesting addition to the
kitchen is the concrete countertop. Having used all Cheng NeoMix
products, the finished product is a visually stunning work
surface with rich, complex colors: NeoMix Pro-Formula’s
reddish-brown color, Brick, and flecks of semi-precious
Leopardskin (yellow and black) aggregates. “This particular
color combination blended perfectly with the color theme we had
for the cabinetry, tile backsplash, floor and wall finishes,”
says Ali. Understated design details of the 12-foot long, 3-inch
thick concrete countertop include rounded edges at the
countertop front and the sink openings as well as a decorative
metal strip under the front edge of the countertop to conceal
the plywood sub-top.

Chris and Ali took special note that despite the tight working
space of their basement, their collaborative work ran smoothly
from pour to finish. “Like the rest of our remodel project,
building the concrete countertop brought us closer together,”
says Chris. “We work very well together. It starts from the fact
that we communicate very well and our design ideas complement
each other.”

With the completion of the project and the creative work done,
Chris and Ali admit that their biggest challenge was building
the concrete forms. “Particularly for the sink cut-out, which
has radius corners and two different size basins,” says Chris.

Though Concrete Countertops afforded them a solid guide
throughout the project, there were a few questions they had that
went beyond the book, they received assistance and guidance from
Cheng Concrete Exchange, the designer and author’s online
resource for frequently asked concrete countertop questions,
image galleries from other DIY projects, and complete line of

Despite a couple of minor learning curves, Chris maintains that
there is an overwhelming sense of accomplishment upon completing
their concrete countertop. “The best part is seeing and feeling
the finished product and knowing we did it!” It’s been said that
if a couple can survive a home remodel — especially — a DIY
project together–they can survive anything.

Natural gas grills are all the craze in outdoor cooking, and it isn’t surprising why. Read on to find out it is and what benefits you can get from it to decide if it is right for you.

The advantages of using a natural gas grill

Natural gas grills are extremely convenient to use. Because it is fueled by your own home’s natural gas line, it always has a constant supply of gas so you never need to refill. And because there is no refilling, there are no bulky tanks (unlike propane-based gas grills).

Natural gas grills are also very easy to use. Most models come with instant on/off switches - just wait a minute or two for your grill to be ready. It is also very easy to control temperature using a natural gas grill, so there is almost never any need to worry about burning your steak or whatever food you are grilling. Your barbeques always come out precisely cooked and perfect.

Cost is not a problem either. Experts say that operating a natural gas grill costs only about 1/3 of what using normal propane gas grills would cost you. If you use a natural gas grill for 60 hours in a year, for example, you only spend around $26. That’s $87 less than what you would spend if you used propane.

The first thing to consider when buying a natural gas grill is its size. Is it big enough so that you can work comfortably? The average gas grill has about 400 square inches of grilling area, which is already decent to work on. Buy bigger if you expect to use your grill for bigger parties.

Also make sure that the natural gas grill you are buying is stable. It should never wobble. Experts likewise suggest that you purchase natural gas grills made of stainless steel. They generally last longer and are more aesthetically pleasant.

Anyone with older aluminum siding is well aware of the paint
chalking problem. Just rub your hand along the old siding and
the chalky old paint will be all over your palm. Trying to get
paint to stick to this could be a real problem. This is due to
oxidation of the paint. Siding manufacturers originally referred
to this problem as a “benefit”. They called it, “self cleaning”,
as the paint literally washed off the house.

Older vinyl siding is also a problem. UV light fades vinyl
siding over time and the siding becomes very unsightly.

Many unfortunate homeowners and contractors have experienced the
dismay, when they repainted their homes, only to find the new
paint peeling off a few months later. Both problems with older
aluminum and vinyl siding can be overcome with proper cleaning,
surface preparation and re-painting.

Cleaning

You will need to rent a powerful pressure washer with at least
3000 psi. You will want a pressure washer powerful enough to
remove most of the old chalky paint off the aluminum siding or,
to remove any dirt buildup on the old vinyl siding.

Start at the top course of siding and work your way down. You
will need to keep the pressure wand fairly close to the siding
surface to effectively remove the old paint. In some areas, you
may find that the paint comes off to the bare metal. Be careful
near windows, corners, soffits and doorways. The water under
pressure, can be forced behind these areas causing damage. You
can add TSP or other cleaning solutions to the reservoir for
mildew, algae or other grime built up. If you do use a cleaning
solution, be sure to completely rinse it off with your pressure
washer. You should allow your home to dry for several days in
dry, sunny weather before proceeding to the painting process.

If you are repainting vinyl siding or vinyl coated aluminum
siding, you may need a surface de-glosser. This is a solvent
type product used to remove any shine on the surface and to help
your first coat to adhere better. You will have no trouble
finding a good de-glosser at your local paint supply store.

Application

I like a commercial type airless sprayer. It will draw the
paint directly out of your 5 gallon paint pails, through the
hose and into your spray gun. These are available to rent at
many tool rental locations and even some paint supply stores
that supply contractors. If your paint is real high quality
latex, it will be thicker than regular latex paint and will
require a more powerful airless sprayer.

Priming

This step is equally as critical as the step above. Actually,
the cleaning and surface preparation phases will make or break
the results of your project.

I like a latex paint additive called emulsa-bond for the first
coat. Emulsa-bond is a bonding agent you will add to the first
coat of paint or primer, to help it to bond to the old siding.

I buy the best grade exterior latex paint, rather than oil or
other solvent based paint. Latex paint seems to keep up with the
expansion and contraction of the siding very well. The high
quality latex paint I buy needs no primer. I add the bonding
agent directly into the first color coat. Check with your paint
supplier whether or not to use a primer. The rule of thumb is,
when in doubt, use a primer. If you use a primer, add the
bonding agent into it before applying. There are also bonding
agents available for oil or other solvent based paints. One type
is called penetrol. These are usually available at a painting
contractor supply store.

Many contractors will spot prime areas, especially where bare
metal is exposed. I don’t like spot priming because it can lead
to an uneven looking top coat. When I put a primer coat on, I
prime the entire home. This gives a uniform surface finish later
on.

Finish Coat

Your top coat will be color only. You should check with your
paint manufacturer to see if you need one or two top coats after
the base coat. Like I mentioned above, buy the highest quality
exterior paint.

In Conclusion

Proper cleaning and surface preparation are the two main
ingredients to a successful painting job. A bonding agent in the
first coat is also very critical to avoid paint peeling off
later on. Using these techniques, I’ve re-painted homes that
have lasted far longer than the original factory applied finish.
